Tactile-symbol system enabling visually impaired and unsighted people to read and write. Named after Louis Braille, an unsighted 19th-century French teacher who devised it. Grade 1 involves a character-by-character translation of printed materials; Grade 2 uses special contractions (much like the phonetic parts of speech) for messages. Grade 2 is required by legislation such as the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Brass Plated Steel

A product generally used with a laser engraver. A sheet of steel is plated with a very thin layer of brass and polished prior to the application of a color coating. When the color coating is removed with a laser, the brass plating shows through, making the product appear to be brass. One advantage over regular brass is that regular brass is not polished, so when it is laser engraved, the image is dull. Another advantage is price, since this product is usually about half the price of regular brass and about ¼ the price of polished brass.

Brass

A semi-soft alloy of copper and zinc, it is a very popular material for engraving. Often painted with a thin layer of color, the color layer can be burnished or diamond drag can be used to remove the coating and let the brass show through.

Term related to printers and graphics/color application programs. Letters stand for the three primary printing colors of cyan, magenta and yellow, plus black (K). Color pallets in various computer and printing programs use a CMYK pallet.

Collet

Device used to hold engraving tools at the bottom of the spindle. Can prevent tool drift and shake due to vibration; particularly effective when using a rotary spindle to work with harder substrates, such as stainless steel.

Color Chart

A tool used by printers and sublimators to select a desired color. Consists of small bits of color printed onto a desired substrate showing the resulting color gained from a particular color pallet. By selecting a printed color, the designer can be assured of the exact color that will appear in the finished product.

Meaning of Sublimation

The literal meaning – as it is defined in the science world – sublimation is the phase transition of a substance from a solid directly to a gas without going through a liquid phase. This phase occurs under specific temperature and pressure conditions. As for dye sublimation, the "solid" part of the equation denotes the microscopic particles of solid ink dyes which rest on the surface of your printed, ready-to-transfer sublimation page which you printed directly from CorelDRAW or Adobe PhotoShop to a supported Epson, Ricoh or Mutoh sublimation printer. When introduced to heat, these solid ink particles turn directly to a gas which then permanently dyes the decorated surface and sub-surface of your product.
